Despite being a little red dot, Singapore has consistently been ranked as one of the most expensive places to live in around the world. To make matters worse, many things here have become more and more expensive (cries). Now, what if I tell you you can easily get what you want and need without paying the full price or even a single cent? Yes, you read that right, and it is possible with these 5 apps that I will be sharing with you in this article!

P.S. If you are a student reading this, make sure to check out my previous article on some of the perks and discounts that you should not miss out on as a student.

1. Olio

Seeking a fuss-free way to declutter your stuff or find items you need at a lower cost? Look no further than Olio, a neighbourhood marketplace that easily lets you browse various food and non-food items that people are giving away or looking for near you!

Not only can you give, sell, take, and buy items like textbooks and groceries on Olio, but you can also lend people stuff that you do not need or borrow what you need from others. It works like Carousell, but Olio focuses more on giving and sharing stuff for a good cause. As people say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

💡 Pro Tip: Use the map and filter functions to quickly search for what you are planning to take and buy. If you do not want to spend money on something that you are likely only going to use once, consider using Olio to see if people are giving it away for free!

2. Eatigo

Indulge in delicious, luxurious food without breaking the bank with Asia’s top restaurant booking platform, Eatigo! When it comes to the types of food options available, you will definitely be spoilt for choice with their wide choice of selections that cater to all budgets and taste buds. Omakase, all-you-can-eat buffets, desserts — you name it, they have it.

Regardless of the number of people and restaurant selected in your booking, you are bound to get time-based discounts that go up to 50% every day. What a steal, right? Well, here comes the even better part. There is no minimum spending required, and all you have to do is just make a booking to enjoy these discounts! Based on personal experience, your best bet to get 50% discounts is usually within the 3pm - 5pm timeframe. If you do not mind having a late lunch or early dinner, consider dining in during these non-peak hours to maximise your savings!

💡 Pro Tip: Eatigo occasionally launches exclusive promotion codes that can be used in conjunction with the time-based discounts! These would often come in the form of cash vouchers or instant discounts off your final bill. Do read the terms and conditions carefully though, because certain promotion codes require a minimum number of people in your booking or can only be used during a specified period. You can usually find these codes in the app and through your email inbox, so do keep a look out there because you never know when it happens!

3. Yindii

Given that Yindii is still a relatively new app at the time of this writing, it is no surprise if you have yet to hear of it before. However, if you are familiar with Too Good To Go, Yindii pretty much works the same way in that you can purchase surprise bags containing quality surplus food at slashed prices.

Boasting well-known brand partners like Delifrance, SaladStop, and Paul Bakery, these surplus foods include but are not limited to baked goods, fresh salad bowls, and groceries! While you cannot choose what goes inside your surprise bag, they are sold at a whopping 50% to 80% off their retail price in return. On top of saving money, you also help reduce food waste and save the earth. If you were to ask me, I would take this bargain any day because I am a deal-seeker who does not like to waste food!

💡 Pro Tip: Yindii’s surprise bags are sold in limited quantities, typically between lunch and dinner, on a first-come, first-served basis. To ensure that you get your hands on your desired surprise bag, enable push notifications and heart the brands that you are keen on purchasing from. That way, you will be among the first few to be notified of their availability!

4. Kris+

As an extension of KrisFlyer, Singapore Airlines’ frequent flyer programme, Kris+ is a lifestyle rewards app that provides KrisFlyer members with exclusive deals and privileges across diverse categories, including food, shopping, travel, lifestyle, entertainment, and transportation. Besides being able to earn miles for every flight booking made with Singapore Airlines, you will also get to earn KrisPay miles with every purchase made on Kris+!

To enjoy these perks, all you need to do is:

  1. Download the Kris+ app available on the App Store or Google Play

  2. Sign up to be a KrisFlyer member if you have yet to do so

  3. Set up Apple Pay or Google Pay, or link your Mastercard debit or credit card with either digital wallet as the default payment method in the Kris+ app

Nonetheless, do note that KrisFlyer miles and KrisPay miles are not the same thing, so you would need to transfer your miles from Kris+ to your KrisFlyer account within 21 days of conversion. Explaining the different payment methods and process of transferring miles in Kris+ will be quite lengthy for this article, so you may refer here for more information instead.

💡 Pro Tip: Some partner merchants on Kris+ offer birthday privileges to KrisFlyer members! They are labelled with the tag ‘Birthday’ in the app and range from discounts and 1-for-1 deals to even complimentary treats. If you also happen to have a points-earning card, add it to your digital wallet and use it to pay for Kris+ purchases to maximise your mile earnings!

5. KaiKai

Get to save more and spend less on food, beauty, electronics, and fashion using KaiKai, a gamified shopping app originating from our little red dot! Expect secret, exclusive deals with limited quantities from well-loved brands including Tuk Tuk Cha, Poke Theory, and The Alley. Like Olio, you can easily filter by location to search for the best deals near you in KaiKai.

Hearsay, they also partner with brands in and near NUS, including Nami Cafe, located near the School of Computing and Business School. What sets KaiKai apart from all the other apps mentioned in this article is that you get rewarded cryptocurrency as cashback. And the best part? It never expires so you need not worry and rush to use it to offset your next KaiKai purchase!

💡 Pro Tip: KaiKai has daily hype drops at 12pm and 6pm respectively. They are flash deals that last for only 100 seconds, so keep a lookout and be quick before they get snagged up by others!

With these money-saving apps, cutting down on spending will become easier to achieve than ever. Just as I have benefitted from downloading and using these apps, I hope that they also help you maximise your savings and enjoy more for less! Remember, it is never too late to start saving for your future.
